Scary thought

Bladerunner5

Larry Page , co-founder of Google, has apparently announced that the web behemoth is in the development stages of Artificial Intelligence (AI). The realization, it is claimed, may not be as far off as we think. Yesterday I left a comment on John Grant’s blog about companies that embody innovation. I used Google as an example of an organisation that allows it’s staff time to innovate. And how. The thought that the company that has the largest conglomeration of digital information and computing power in the world may harness this to develop AI is quite astounding.

Scary is right! Not only does Google have massive computing power, they also know more about you and I and what we look at, buy, play and search for than any other company.
Google is certainly an interesting company — especially when it comes to harnessing and harvesting innovation. And they are great at commercialising — no doubt. But AI is one of those areas which blur the lines between man and machine … between ethics and reality. The very fact that Google is engaging on such a project has some very far reaching ramifications for us all. It will make for interesting times!
