Friends (Not)Reunited

Is it just me or is Friends Reunited a bit pants? I got a ‘buzz’ note on e-mail the other day from someone who I hadn’t seen since secondary school. Nice to hear from him I thought, so I go to send him a note back. Oh, I can’t. Not unless I "upgrade my membership" which will set me back £7.50. No thanks, I’ll just find him on Facebook and send him a message for free. Or maybe I’ll pay £7.50 and send all my school mates an invite to the Simon Langton school group I’ve just set up on Facebook. And then I’ll invite them all to my "I didn’t pay £7.50 to Friends Reunited" Facebook group.

Couldn’t agree more – it’s gone from dotcom darling to edge of the dead pool in about a year.
Just goes to show how flexible your business has to be when you’re operating online, and how difficult it is to make plans when the world around you changes so fast. Was it Murdoch who said something about no longer having any idea what his plans are for the following yeah?
It’s amazing how quickly a star can fall from grace online. Then again, the same can happen online (eg Northern Rock and Ratners). I suppose the difference is that screwing up a bricks and mortar business is from (misguided) action – whereas screwing up an online business is often from in-action.
    A fiver says MySpace is next… 😉

Somebody bet me a fiver last night that Facebook would be dead within 18 months and that everbody would bugger off to niche networks…
My money was on facebook though – they’re still innovating they release new code every day (automatically – see ‘continuous integration’). For example they’re about to release friend groups functionality that lets you catagorise your friends (eg work, high school, proper friends, ex girlfriends…).
I’d say they’re more like the next Microsoft – their platform is the Web OS.
