Earth Hour

Today is earth hour day. You can support it by turning off your lights between 8pm and 9pm local time to promote electicity conservation. The first earth hour in Sydney in 2007 engaged around 2.2 million people and cut the city's mains electricity consumption by upto 10%. This one will be much bigger. And meanwhile, as a show of support, you have to admire Google for doing this:

**UPDATE:** Having seen John's suggestion, Only Dead Fish is going to be changed to a black template for the day. Great idea John.

Despite much hype, Earth Hour didn’t seem to have the impact it did last year. Melbourne stats were a 5% reduction in power use. That’s half of last year. Still there were a lot more cities involved so I guess that’s a good thing.

Hi Stan. Yes, a shame if it didn’t get as much leverage in Os this year. Seems to have been a lot more widespread though this time around so hopefully it’s gaining some kind of momentum. As a concept I think it’s a good way of focusing awareness about our individual impact so is worth doing.

Google aren’t my friend currently. I like the Blackle page idea, fair do’s, and I know that no corporation is totally clean, but the shenanigans with China/Tibet mean they don’t get a smiley face from me.
Some anti-Google ads coming soon on my blog!

Fair enough Pisspoor, though I think to do something as visible as this took some doing so I admire them for that
