Visualizing The Impalpable

Regular readers will know I have a bit of a thing for data visualizations at the moment. One of the things I like about them is that they bring life to things that were previously hard or impossible to envisage. Here's another couple of great ones from the ever-fascinating Flowing Data. First up, Nitmesh pointed me at this visualization of all the flights over the world over a 24 hour period. Quite hypnotic to watch:

Air Traffic Worldwide 24HR from kouko a on Vimeo.

And then I saw that the New York Times have created a map showing live twitter chatter during the Super Bowl, visualizing the frequency and location of commonly used words in Super Bowl related tweets. Interestingly, one of the tabs allows you to watch tweeting about the ads along the timeline of the game. Can't help but feel that we're only just at the beginning of some really interesting applications of this kind of stuff. Enjoy.

Wow! What a neat way to essentially go back in time and SEE what was going on and what people were talking about during the game. I saw a lot of Budweiser popping up on the map.
What do you think about the Budweiser Clydesdales ads? This video has an interesting comment where the poster said “I think budweiser needs to get off of the whole Clydesdale thing, it might have gotten a decent ad rating on USA Today but I think they weren’t rememberable at all and they were pretty boring.” Agree? Disagree? The link is http://newsy.com/videos/super_bowl_ads_recession_proof/

I think the Twitter visualisation thing is great. I love the way Springsteen suddenly appears and then goes away again. I think this is an area we are going to see more and more of – measuring / demonstrating the echo effect of traditional media in social venues like blogs / Twitter etc.
Great spot – thanks for sharing!
