Post Of The Month – June 2010 – Nominations

ThinktankPOTM

Nominations are open for Post Of The Month, so please nominate your favourite posts from the month of June in the
comments below. Seems like people have been using their Cognitive Surplus over the past four weeks to write some exceptionally good blog posts so it's been difficult to begin with only a few, but as a starter, I've listed four nominations of my own – please add yours and I'll stick them all up for a vote. OK, so my starting four are:

The First Cannes Lion For Not Advertising At All from Alex Bogusky

The Future Of News: Not So Bleak, Not So Rosy by Martin Moore

Strategy Is…How Do We Make Money from Faris Yakob

A Creative Mind Is An Enquiring Mind by Dave Trott

And you can nominate your own favourite below…

I wanted to search for a blog post that was worth a nomination, but after reading A Creative Mind Is An Enquiring Mind by Dave Trott` it came on first for me.
Why? Because the simple way of asking questions is the best way we can learn. Listen and then learn, and that’s just another way of being creative.

I motion to have Faris’ post removed. In fact I think he should pull the post down. unless it was meant as a brilliant piece of satire. In that case it wins handsdown.
To nominate someone who is simply stating the most obvious of truths, shows how truly messed up adland is.
Winning by Faris, would mean validating all the years that people acted otherwise before he wrote that post..
Off course i am being dramatic about the validation part, but please Faris…retreact your post.
I am all for teaching kids the obvious lessons of history we always forget, but forgetting we are here to make money is to cardinal to let slide..

As we are in Cognitive Surplus mode the following is a valuable read:
Clay Shirky’s “Cognitive Surplus”: Is creating and sharing always a more moral choice than consuming?

And I feel you should also include Oliver Blanchard’s
21 things my dog taught me about being a better man.

@niko Hi Niko – it was me that nominated Faris’ post and my reason for nominating it was exactly because it makes that very simple (& you would think obvious) point. In his post, Faris references a project being run by Bud Caddell on the definition of strategy, noting that the variety of definitions in the comments perhaps reflect “how far from understanding business we can sometimes be as an industry”. And I agree with him. So his point is, in that context and in amongst all the reflections on the nature of planning, one worth making. So, unless Faris wants to retract it, I’ll let it stand. I value your opinion, so thanks for the comment, and hope you understand.

Neil, again, your blog, your choice…I just feel that even the reminder of why agencies are here is beyond acceptable..and that project, while admirable, just adds to the quicksand swamp that planners and agencies find themselves in.
So no, I choose to not understand (though I do) why you nominated Faris’s post..
This is nothing against Faris or Budd personally (I mean the guys knows their stuff and then some and won’t/should loose sleep over my rants) but the nature and purpose has always been clear. Make money or make place for someone who does..Not make ads or if that doesnt work double down on some more ads..
This is just the latest in a line of posts of guys saying that making money is the “new black”..
That pisses me off,but your blog your call
    just my thoughts

Ben Malbon’s “Are You Ready To Form Voltron? On the Value of T-Shaped People”
    http://bbh-labs.com/are-you-ready-to-form-voltron-on-the-value-of-t-shaped-people
    Properly entertaining AND profoundly useful*.
*I am oh-so-slightly-biased, sure, but please don’t hold that against the nomination. Read it if you haven’t already. It deserves to win.

@niko I don’t disagree with what your saying but I think that the variety of interpretations of that one word is evidenced by the variety of definitions in the comments to Bud’s post. POTM posts are often nominated because they contain new or challenging thinking. In this case, it is because it is speaking up for the simplest of truths.

Looks like I missed the cut. I would have voted for http://alexbogusky.posterous.com/why-is-my-car-so-dumb though you have a Bogusky post up already. My reserve would have been http://mikearauz.wordpress.com/2010/06/03/community-centered-collective-action-design-framework/

Yes, I’m afraid so, Simon – thanks anyway. The Mike Arauz post nearly made my first cut too – it’s a good one alright
